Media Questionnaire Results Analysis

AGE and GENDER
From the information gathered from my questionnaire about age, 83.33% of the participants were aged between 13 and 19. However, 16.67% shows between 60 and 69 – I personally believe it’s really someone from my class messing around because it would be like 1% chance of a 60+ year old finding my survey. Since the results are clearly showing teens are the main audience here, they will be more interested in music from the Top 40 charts – the style of music me and Kirstey are into and using for the music video production are completely different to the ideal teen audience due to being Metal mixed with Electronic Dance Music and that it’s a rare chance artists like Celldweller or Zardonic have been in the UK Top 40. For gender, both genders were 50% male and female. This means the music video and genre has to appeal to a unisex audience.

Favourite genre of music
• 20% of those surveyed liked Pop
• 20% liked Rock (its subgenre counterparts like Metal and Punk etc. were included in the option box)
• 20% stated J-Rock as a custom response
• 40% liked Grime
 • Neither liked Country, EDM, Reggae, Soundtrack, R&B, Classical or Instrumental

 FAVOURITE ARTIST OR BAND:

5 answered, 1 skipped. 1. Sia 2. Twenty-One Pilots 3. Baby-Metal 4. Band of Skulls 5. Kanye West, Mikill Pane These results show that the respondents favour mainstream music due to the Top 40 played regularly on radio or streaming apps and most teens are more into the really modern songs. There isn’t really that much that can be written about this.

What would be liked to be seen in a music video?

 The people surveyed answered:
• Something to allow you to understand the narrative
 • The artist
 • Good narrative
 • Different shots, several people, special effects
 • Music and narrative story
 • Artsy shots, use of isolated places

What you dislike in a music video?
 • Over-editing
 • When it cuts to something irrelevant
 • When there are too many things going on and there isn’t a story
 • Dancing
 • A person standing still singing

The responses suggest that the ideal music video cannot be messy or over-complicated but it has to have a variety of shots, angles, effects and a decent story. The music video will not have dancing or a person standing still singing (even if it did, it would be a one off shot). The video will have a clear narrative.

What do you think about the Metal genre being mixed with EDM? (Potentially the main genre/theme of our music video) Artists such as Celldweller and Zardonic make this music)
 Great – 16.67%
 Interesting – 50%
Okay – 16.67%
Other – 16.67% (a silly response saying: I am the king of grime, and i (sic) will be for a very long time)

This means that people are open to the idea of Metal mixed with EDM – a good thing for us making a music video centred around this.

What do you think of the digipak design?

            ·    I like it, it stands out
            ·   Looks good suits your chosen genre

What would you improve?

·         Make the track list writing bigger so it takes up the whole cover
·         More tracks in the track list

I have just made the track list writing larger by a fraction and added 2 or 3 more tracks. I will not add more track names since around 8 or 10 will be adequate enough for a small album.

Do you feel that this design fits the Metal EDM / Drum and Bass theme and genre? Why?

·         Yes, the colours and effects used suit it
·         Yes, has the edgy look to it

The 3D style artwork and the colours have a somewhat futuristic edge to them and distorted effect. This will fit Drum & Bass quite well as well as the Metal side of it. The front cover was originally going to be my inside left cover but I decided to rework the whole album design with the 3D trees being the new front cover and a purple version on the inside. I ended up doing a green and yellow version with modifications for the magazine advert as well to have consistency to the album’s artwork.
I wanted the album artwork to be rather colourful and not bland so it stands out and appeals to the intended audience.

For the magazine ad, front cover and inside with disc holder, a set theme is apparent. The 3D effect was achieved by layering two identical images over each other, reducing the opacity on the top layer and moving it over to the right slightly. The reds and blue were then altered on both to give the 3D effect and distortion with it. Blurring the trees in the background and burning areas with the burn tool before this allowed for different kinds of effects. The disc image came from the main tree area with the defined leaves. I made the image a pinkish red with a slight hint of blue in the leaves. I found it harder to make the back cover due to the measurements allocated for the spine areas and artwork created for the back itself. I took a picture of the sky near the field area the front cover was taken from and made the image red and altered the saturation. The tracklisting was simply slapped on top along with the barcode and legal text etc.
